Discover why the Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PLUS is the superior choice to ensure the safety and efficiency of your operations. Experience substantial advances in waterproof integrity testing with a device that integrates advanced technology with a user-friendly design.
Coltraco has an impressive history of pioneering ultrasonic technologies. Since the introduction of the first Portascanner® Watertight in 1993, our commitment to innovation has remained steadfast. The original Hedgehog generator design, which won the Safety at Sea Award in 1994, has undergone numerous technological evolutions to become today's superior Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PLUS. Our devices are trusted by esteemed naval forces, including the Royal Navy and the Indian Navy, underscoring their reliability and effectiveness.
The evolution of Coltraco's generator technology underscores our commitment to continuous improvement. The initial complementary bulk generator with "hedgehog design" was groundbreaking at the time but, as mentioned above, was inefficient due to addressing limitations.
Despite significant technological advances, many companies continue to use outdated, cumbersome generators for waterproof testing:
- Inefficient ultrasonic transmission: Conventional generators emit random ultrasonic sound, leading to suboptimal testing of hatch covers.
- The lack of directionality in ultrasonic waves reduces the accuracy of detecting small leaks.
- Limited battery life: Heavy-duty batteries with short life spans complicate and prolong test operations. Regular battery charging or replacement interrupts the testing process, reducing overall efficiency.
- Non-magnetic mounting: Generators without magnetic supports must be placed on the load floor, which costs valuable time and increases operational inefficiency.
Distinguishing features of the Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PLUS
The Portascanner® WATERTIGHT PLUS generator fills the entire cargo hold with ultrasound. The receiver detects the smallest ultrasonic signals, allowing leaks as small as 0.06 mm to be located. The specific output power of the generator is chosen to fill the space and works in conjunction with the receiver without overwhelming the receiver. This ensures that Open Hatch values remain a meaningful quantitative measurement with which to effectively assess water and weather tightness. "Overwhelmed" receivers interrupt the measurement at an arbitrary maximum, which would render the Open Hatch values meaningless. It is important to avoid a maximum value for the OHV because a maximum value can actually be anything above the maximum and is therefore useless compared to the closed value at the time the measurement is taken. Furthermore, there is a misconception that ultrasound only travels in one direction; it actually reflects on surfaces, giving you full coverage of the cargo area. Having 5 transducers is as powerful as heavy and bulky older-style generators, which are still used on most basic models on the market.
